"MARDI GRAS" "From the start, this painting seemed to have a life of it's own. It took about two years for completion. First I enjoyed painting large, loose washes of overlapping watercolors that blended beautifully together. I liked what happened, but I didn't know how it could be developed into a painting. Not wanting to abandon it, I placed it in my studio where it could be studied from every angle. Eventually, I imagined the elements of a female figure in the foreground plus other vague figures. Could it be a carnival? With a little more work, it then began to look like a beach party. So, an umbrella was added to tie the group together. Finally after the inclusion of beads, ruffles, scarves and turbans, I realized that my painting had become 'Mardi Gras'." June Floren Pritchard |

"CATHEDRAL IN DUBROVNIK" "It was a wonderful day in May. I sat on the white marble street in this ancient walled city and painted as crowds walked by. Some stopped to watch, and spoke to me in other languages. I answered in English. A dog lapped at the water I was using to wash my brushes. I later learned that the Cathedral I had painted was built by Richard the Lion-Hearted after surviving a shipwreck during the Crusades. He dedicated it to the Virgin Mary." June Floren Pritchard |

"well, I think it's that direction!" "There are only marble corridors in the ancient walled city of Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia. Small shops seem hidden along the maze - like streets. It is easy to lose one's direction. It is also easy to imagine that even the "locals" might sometimes become confused." June Floren Pritchard |
